Reasons Why We at PureLife Dentists Patients Love Bamboo Toothbrushes

Over 7 billion people in the world use plastic toothbrushes and with each person going through multiple toothbrushes a year, that equates to thousands of these toothbrushes being thrown away every day and an incredible amount of waste in our oceans and landfills.

As a dentist, what can you do to help? By making one simple change.

Rather than handing out standard patient packs which include a typical toothbrush, why not give your patients a stylish bamboo toothbrush instead?

Why bamboo?

Bamboo is

  1. The fastest growing plant on the planet, so it’s very sustainable
  2. Naturally anti-microbial, so it’s cleaner than a plastic toothbrush because the bamboo inhibits the growth of bacteria
  3. Biodegradable, unlike your plastic toothbrush

What type of bamboo do you use and how is the toothbrush organic?

We use moso bamboo (the same type of high-quality bamboo used in cutting boards), which is grown naturally, without any added chemicals or pesticides of any kind. Plus, it’s coated in a completely natural wax to keep it silky and dry!

How is the bamboo handle biodegradable?

When you have finished using your toothbrush and after pulling out the bristles, you can dispose of the handle by pushing it into the soil in your backyard or throwing the handle into your compost pile, where it will decompose naturally (instead of sitting in a landfill forever)!

What kind of bristles do you use and how are they recyclable?

The bristles on the toothbrush are made from a dental grade nylon, DuPont Tynex, which is arguably the best quality and most trusted bristle available. Because we do not use glue to hold the bristles in, you can easily recycle the bristles if you pull the bristles out with pliers.

Unfortunately, the bristles are not also biodegradable. We’ve done an incredible amount of testing, and have found that claimed “biodegradable bristles” either AREN’T, or if they are they actually start to decompose in your mouth with just a week or two of use. Instead, we decided to use the BEST POSSIBLE BRISTLE for your mouth, and the BEST POSSIBLE HANDLE for the Earth.

Where are they made?

The bamboo used in your toothbrush is safely and conscientiously harvested from the bamboo-rich mountain regions of China and crafted in a family-owned workshop. The toothbrushes are carefully monitored and quality-checked, to make sure what you put in your mouth is of the highest quality!

Do the toothbrushes mold from excess water?

As long as the toothbrush isn’t soaked in liquid or left in a very moist area, there will be no molding, especially if left in an open toothbrush rack. It is natural and will soak up water eventually. But any long-term wetness will definitely shorten the life of your brush, so please don’t let your toothbrush sit in water.

Are these toothbrushes negatively affecting the pandas’ food sources?

Nope, there’s no need to worry since pandas don’t eat moso bamboo – and that’s what we use for our bamboo toothbrushes.

How long do the toothbrushes last?

They last as long as any plastic toothbrush, or about 2-3 months.

Do they splinter?

No, they do not splinter; however, this is still a natural product so an imperfection can cause some rough parts, but they can be found and sanded or smoothed out easily.

How can patients tell their toothbrushes apart if they all look the same?

To keep our brush free from glues, inks, dyes and plastics means that they do look alike, but with a pen or marker patients can decorate their brushes to make it their own.

Fun Facts About Bamboo

bamboo stalk single

Bamboos are some of the fastest-growing plants in the world; certain species can grow 35 inches within 24 hours.

Bamboo is commonly used in construction as it has a higher compressive strength than wood, brick or concrete and a tensile strength that rivals steel.

Pandas must consume 20 to 40 pounds of bamboo per day in order to absorb all the nutrients needed.
