PureLife Dental Introduces New PureWay Sharps Disposal Systems to Better Meet the Waste Management and Compliance Needs of Dentists
Oct 28, 2015
SANTA MONICA, California — PureLife Dental, a health- and environmentally-focused dental distributor, is proud to introduce its new line of Sharps Disposal Systems. Dentists can now responsibly dispose of their sharps and other used healthcare materials without the hassle and expense of traditional monthly pickup services, as PureLife’s systems do not require contracts or any additional fees, saving dentists an average of 50% or more.
In addition, these systems offer unique benefits compared to other ship-back systems on the market. For one, PureWay® sharps containers are up to 20% larger than the industry standard, saving dental offices money throughout the year as fewer containers need to be purchased. Furthermore, PureLife saves customers time by pre-filling the manifest to ensure the document contains the correct information. Every sharps system is also tracked from pickup to destruction via live email notifications and electronic certificates are automatically sent to the customer, unlike other companies which require the dental office to submit a request before they can receive a certificate.
“Waste management and compliance have always been a core focus for us, aligning with our health-conscious identity,” said PureLife CEO, Rodney Hanoon. “Because dental offices are so busy on a daily basis, we identified a clear market need for a simpler and more convenient way for our customers to stay compliant. That’s why our Sharps Disposal Systems—which include a prepaid return shipping box and pre-filled manifest along with inventory management and auto-reorder options—were created as a complete end-to-end solution for dentists to conveniently manage their waste.”
With the addition of PureWay® Sharps Disposal Systems, PureLife continues to give dentists access to complete waste and compliance solutions. Dental offices can order by contacting PureLife toll-free at 877-777-3303 or online at http://www.PureLifeDental.com.
PureLife Sponsors $500,000 Grant to Give Away 1,000 Amalgam Separators to Dentists in Light of Impending EPA Regulation
Jul 21, 2015
SANTA MONICA, California — For a limited time, 1,000 US dentists can receive a free ISO-certified ECO II amalgam separator courtesy of a grant sponsored by PureLife Dental, a health- and environmentally-focused dental distributor. PureLife’s grant is timely, as it coincides with the EPA’s pending decision that would require all dentists to control mercury discharges by installing an amalgam separator as early as 2016.
The adverse effects of mercury on human and environmental health has been a hot topic recently. In fact, the EPA estimates that 50% of the mercury pollution in our wastewaters is attributed to dental amalgam. Fortunately, dentists can virtually eliminate their contribution to this problem by installing an amalgam separator. PureLife’s grant goes one step further to help eliminate the financial barriers of owning a separator, especially for smaller practices.
“I think there is a common misconception that going green is either too costly or requires a lot of time and effort. However, many dentists are not aware of how low-maintenance amalgam separators really are and how big a difference they can make simply by installing one in their office,” said PureLife CEO, Rodney Hanoon. “The purpose of the Make a Difference Grant is to simultaneously educate dentists and make it as easy as possible for them to responsibly dispose of amalgam waste.”
Through the Make a Difference Grant, PureLife continues its commitment of giving back to the dental community and the planet alike. Dental offices can take part in the grant and receive a free ECO II amalgam separator by contacting PureLife toll-free at 877-777-3303 x4 or online at http://www.PureLifeDental.com/Grant.

PureLife Dental Offsets Carbon Equivalent of Planting 157,000 Trees, Reducing Industry’s Eco Impact
Apr 21, 2014
SANTA MONICA, California — Since its launch in 2009, PureLife Dental has offset its carbon emissions as part of its ongoing commitment to improving environmental and human health. Now, five years later, those offsets have really added up: PureLife has offset 6,126 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) – the equivalent of planting over 157,000 trees, and letting them grow for ten years.
PureLife’s offsets cover 100% of the emissions generated by the company’s office and warehouse operations, from business travel and energy use to employees’ own personal commutes. PureLife also offsets all of the carbon emissions from the transportation and delivery of its products, from the manufacturing line to the customer’s door. In short, every product a dental office buys from PureLife comes with an improved eco impact.
“Though we’re announcing this achievement as part of our Earth Day celebration, PureLife works to reduce the dental industry’s environmental impact every day, not just on Earth Day,” said PureLife CEO Rodney Hanoon. “As a dental dealer, one of our primary environmental impacts comes from the shipping of products around the world. That’s why we feel that offsetting our carbon emissions is such an important part of what we do – it’s material to our business and allows us to have an immediate impact on environmental health.”
PureLife partners with the non-profit CarbonFund.org for its offsetting program. The money from these offsets funds environmental programs, like reforestation projects, which help to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. All of CarbonFund’s projects are subject to third-party certification standards, verification and auditing – processes that ensure only high-quality carbon offset projects that are making real carbon emission reductions are funded. CarbonFund’s projects are also additional to what would have occurred without the sale of offsets, a key factor in determining the credibility of carbon offset projects.
PureLife’s 6,126 metric tons of CO2 offset are also the equivalent of:
- 686,771 gallons of gas consumed
- 255,250 propane cylinders used for barbecues
- 2,294 tons of waste sent to landfills vs. recycled
- 14,585,714 miles/year driven by an average passenger vehicle
- 6,580,021 pounds of coal burned

BPA Added To California’s Toxic Chemicals List Making BPA-Free Dental Products from PureLife More Attractive
Apr 18, 2013
SANTA MONICA, California — The State of California has added Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in many dental composites and sealants, to its list of chemicals known to cause birth defects, according to the Los AngelesTimes. The chemical is also found in many common consumer products such as water bottles, soup can linings and store receipts.
For dentists, the addition of BPA to California’s “Prop 65 List” (named after the “right to know” proposition that California voters approved in 1986) may mean that warning signs must be posted to alert patients to their potential exposure to the toxic chemical.
Fortunately, dental dealer PureLife offers BPA-free alternatives to dentists, including the Venus Diamond and the Venus Pearl composites, and the Embrace line of sealants and cements. In addition to being BPA-free, these products offer superior performance to many of their counterparts. For example, the Embrace Wetbond Pit & Fissure Sealant does not require a dry field so it’s an especially good solution for pediatric patients – exactly the audience that can be most adversely affected by exposure to BPA.
Studies have linked BPA to a range of problems, including birth defects and behavioral changes in children. A new study released just last month by the Center for Children’s Environmental Health at Columbia University has also linked the chemical to increased rates of asthma in children. Nationwide, BPA has already been banned from children’s products such as baby bottles and sippy cups.
Providing a growing Green Collection of products with choices that are better for human and environmental health, like BPA-free products, is just one way PureLife makes a difference in the dental industry. From educational efforts like the animated short, The Story of Mercury, to the funding of university studies on “green” product effectiveness, PureLife is leading the industry towards better health.
Established in 2009, PureLife offers dental health professionals a unique combination of name-brand products, compelling prices and high-touch service, so “better health” can be a realistic part of every purchase decision they make. From complete waste solutions to everyday dental supplies, PureLife empowers practitioners to make a positive difference in the health of their patients and staff, and in their environmental impact.
Dr. Oz Misses Key Point on Mercury Amalgam’s Impact on Human Health
Apr 8, 2013
SANTA MONICA, California — About half of all mercury entering wastewaters comes from dental practices, according to the EPA. It’s via this channel that mercury pollution harms the health of all people, not just those with amalgam fillings. However, an inexpensive piece of equipment – an amalgam separator– can virtually eliminate a dental office’s contribution to this problem.
It’s no secret that elemental mercury, which makes up about half of an amalgam filling, is a known toxin. During dental procedures, small particles of mercury can flow down the drain, bypassing chair side traps and making their way into wastewaters. Though treatment plants capture most of the mercury, about 10% is distributed into the environment via sludge that is either incinerated, applied to the land as fertilizer, or deposited in landfills. From there, mercury finds its way to waterways, where is converts to methylmercury, a neurotoxin that builds up in fish and the mammals that consume them, including humans. Methylmercury has been linked to health and developmental problems, particularly in pregnant women, fetuses and young children.
Fortunately, amalgam separators can solve this problem, eliminating the impact of dental amalgam on the environment. Once installed, separators remove more than 99% of mercury from a practice’s wastewater. They are maintenance-free, other than the annual recycling of the collection container. Though only a dozen states currently require separators, the EPA is working on a new nationwide regulation, which is expected to be announced sometime within the next year.
PureLife offers several models of amalgam separators, all of which will eliminate a practice’s contribution to the mercury waste problem. Dental practices should contact PureLife at 877-777-3303 to speak to a Waste Specialist who will help the office determine the best separator for them.
PureLife Refreshes Brand Image to Emphasize Focus on Health, Environment
Sept 24, 2012
SANTA MONICA, California — Since 2009, dental dealer PureLife has worked to empower dental practitioners to make a positive difference in the health of their patients, their staff, and the planet, without sacrificing profitability. To better communicate this focus, PureLife recently launched a revised logo and tagline. The new logo represents the three pillars of “patients, planet, and profit” in an energetic, uplifting way. The new tagline, Make a Difference, not only communicates PureLife’s position in relation to those three pillars, but charges those in the industry to also “make a difference” by reconsidering their habits and the products they buy, and making better choices.
As the first dental dealer focused on human and environmental health, PureLife empowers dental health care practitioners to make a difference by:
- Providing an extensive and growing Feel Good Collection: seeking out products that have reduced eco-impacts, and then offering them at prices competitive with their traditional counterparts, showing that there doesn’t have to be a trade-off between profitability and improving environmental health.
- Identifying “healthier” products: finding non-toxic alternatives that are just as effective as their toxic counterparts, such as the recently introduced 50-Second Solution (BioSURF), a non-toxic surface disinfectant that kills TB in 50 seconds without phenols or aldehydes. Products like these disprove the falsehood that toxicity equals effectiveness and eliminate the trade-off between infection control and staff health.
- Investing in research and education: creating materials like the animated short The Story of Mercury and investing in university research furthers the industry’s knowledge related to topics such as infection control, product effectiveness, and everyday environmental impacts.
- Achieving carbon neutrality through carbon offsets with Carbonfund.org: donations fund reforestation projects, balancing the eco-impact of PureLife’s business activities, such as shipping, commuting, and office operations. This means that every PureLife product comes with a reduced eco-impact, automatically.
- Providing cost-effective waste compliance options: properly disposing of all waste – from sharps to mercury amalgam – is essential for protecting human and environmental health, so PureLife makes it easy with UPS/FedEx pick-up services that can save an office up to 50% over traditional services, with no contracts.

New “Green” Surface Disinfectant Deemed Most Effective, Proving Toxicity Doesn’t Equal Effectiveness
Jun 15, 2012
SANTA MONICA, California — One “green” surface disinfectant, nicknamed The 50-Second Solution, gave several popular disinfectants a run for their money in a recent study analyzing the effectiveness of five different surface disinfectants in a dental setting. Of the disinfectants tested, The 50-Second Solution was deemed the most effective, along with another market-leading solution. The findings come from an independent study conducted jointly by Tufts University and the Forsyth Institute, and sponsored by dental dealer PureLife. In addition to its efficacy, The 50-Second Solution, officially known as BioSurf, has two other key benefits: safety and speed. The 50-Second Solution is non-toxic, making it healthier for staff and patients, and it has the fastest TB kill time on the market at 50 seconds flat. Due to these benefits, PureLife will begin carrying The 50-Second Solution on July 1st, 2012.
With this study, The 50-Second Solution’s performance disproves the falsehood that toxicity equals effectiveness. The right combination of ingredients can do the job as well, if not better, than harsher products, showing that there is no need for a trade-off between infection control and the health of patients and staff. With alcohol as the primary active ingredient, The 50-Second Solution will not corrode metals, and will not stain or stick. It does not include any phenols, aldehydes, or hormone-disrupting surfactants.
The speed with which The 50-Second Solution eliminates TB points to another key issue for a busy dental practice: kill times matter. If a practice turns over its operatory faster than its kill time, doctors, staff, and patients are not properly protected. With a 50-second TB kill time, The 50-Second Solution ensures dental offices that surfaces are properly disinfected between patients.
In addition to the market-leading disinfectant, the Tufts study included two other “green” disinfectants and another traditional one. These three additional disinfectants had varying levels of effectiveness against the three bacteria isolated in Tufts’ dental clinic (Bacillus infantis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus and Pantoea calida).
In isolating these bacteria, the study found unexpected bacteria in the dental clinic – not just oral bacteria, but non-oral bacteria as well, including one normally associated with nursing mothers. These findings underscore the importance of good infection control practices, as patients (and staff) bring in many types of contaminants.
As part of its ongoing commitment to improving environmental and human health, PureLife sponsored this study in the hopes of identifying an eco- and human-friendly surface disinfectant that really worked. Thanks in part to the positive results of the study, PureLife began carrying The 50-Second Solution on July 1st, 2012.

EPA Announcement Proposes to Limit Mercury Waste From Dental Offices
Nov 17, 2010
INGLEWOOD, California —Dental offices account for approximately 50% of mercury waste discharged into local waste treatment plants each year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
With restrictions on mercury waste from dental amalgams, or fillings, expected to take effect by 2012, the EPA and PureLife Dental encourage dental professionals to take action now. PureLife offers each component of a three-part process guaranteed to eliminate as much as 99% of mercury pollution: amalgam separators, amalgam recycling and in-office waste pickup, and certification of compliance.
“With 50-percent of mercury entering local waste treatment plants coming from dental amalgam waste, we believe that this EPA regulation is long overdue,” said Rodney Hanoon, CEO of PureLife Dental. “We fully support the measures with our products and waste management services, and offer these at subsidized prices to our customers. In fact, we often offer these services at or significantly below cost to our customers. We do this as part of our company mission and commitment to the environment.”
The US EPA announced in September 2010 its intention to move forward with rule making for dental facilities. Dental facilities are being encouraged to to act now in anticipation of the forthcoming rules.
“I am pleased that companies like PureLife supplies the tools which dental facilities can place to make a difference in our local waste waters,” stated AL Dube’ of SolmeteX, a U.S. manufacturer of amalgam separators.
“We began work with PureLife Dental in 2009, and are very impressed by their commitment to the environment, even to the point that they will absorb the costs of amalgam separators and recycling programs to help dental offices afford to be greener,” said Walter Ruffini of Pure Water Dev.-METASYS, a company focused on water treatment, water purification, amalgam recycling, and a manufacturer of amalgam separators.
